STATEMENT BY MR. LAM CHAK-PIU, MEMBER OF THE PERFORMING COMPANIES SUB-COMMITTEE
He said (in Cantonese): Mr. Chairman, I was extremely pleased to lead the Hong Kong Dance Company on a performing tour of Beijing from 11 to 22 September at the invitation of the Chinese Dancers Association (). The visit coincided with a one-week 'Conference on Dance Drama Creation' in the Chinese capital. Members of the Company were therefore able to attend the conference as well as performances by other dance companies from various parts of China.
During its 11-day stay in Beijing, the Dance Company gave three performances each of the two full-length dance dramas, 'Jade Love' () and 'Yellow Earth' (), jointly choreographed by Ms. SHU Qiao () and Mr. YING Eding (), at the Nationalities Cultural Palace Theatre () before capacity audiences. As this was the first time a professional dance company from Hong Kong was invited to perform in Beijing, the shows drew a large number of professionals in performing arts, critics, senior government officials and diplomatic corps as well as members of the public.
The two dance dramas, which are choreographed by the Dance Company's Artistic Director Ms. SHU Qiao, received wide discussions at the Conference on Dance Drama Creation. In addition, two seminars on choreography and stage technology of the two productions were specially organized by the Beijing Dance Academy () and the China Stage Art Institute (). The two dance dramas were also recorded by the Central Television Station and the China Beijing Television for subsequent nation-wide telecasting. A lot of publicity was also generated in Hong Kong during and after the tour period.
Comments by critics and professionals in Beijing on the Hong Kong Dance Company's performance were favourable. They were impressed by the Dance Company's achievement in developing Chinese dance, the high standard of choreography and overall production, and the versatility of the leading dancers.
It is considered that the Beijing tour has succeeded in:
(a) enhancing the image of the Urban Council and the Dance Company in both China and Hong Kong through the conference, the performances and the wide publicity generated;
(b) raising the morale and confidence of the dancers;
(c) promoting exchange of choreography and stage experiences between dance circles in Beijing and Hong Kong.
