We have gone through a momentous year, marked by a visit for the first time in Hong Kong's history of a British Prime Minister in office. Although Hong Kong is now experiencing the effects of the worldwide recession plus the anti-protectionist movement against the export of Hong Kong-made goods, it is my belief that with patience, fortitude, and courage, we will be able to enter the new year with renewed vigour and optimism. Hong Kong people should pursue their own evolving style of democracy and freedom, and together with their remarkable resilience, I know they will be able to cope positively with whatever challenges that will face them in the future.
