(ii) expanding the "Hong Kong Collection" of books, pamphlets and other printed materials related to all aspects of local history and activities;

(iii) working towards a centralized reference library in the City Hall with a more comprehensive stock, and reference points throughout the library branches.

(c) To encourage the younger generation to make greater and better use of library facilities through book exhibitions, story hours, organized visits to libraries for school children, etc.

(d) To raise the staff knowledge and efficiency through regular and intensive in-service training.

RESETTLEMENT

13. (a) To continue the programme of resettling all persons who are classed as eligible for resettlement; and in the management and administration of estates and cottage areas, to continue to institute measures designed to improve the living conditions of the residents and to integrate them into the general community.

Hygiene

(b) To keep under review the policy and priorities for resettlement and to suggest changes.

(c) Pending realization of the long term objective of allocating space at 35 square feet for each adult in all types of resettlement accommodation, to urge Government to implement the policy of counting children over the age of 6 as adults for new allocations of accommodation in Mark IV blocks.

(d) To continue to seek the co-operation of the Education Department to have secondary and vocational schools available within reasonable access of resettlement estates.

(e) To improve the programme of relief of overcrowding in Mark I and Mark II estates.

(f) To consider means of improving the buildings in Mark I and Mark II estates, such as by providing individual water supplies, kitchens and sanitary facilities.

HYGIENE DIVISION

14. (a) To continue to co-operate with the Labour Department in the implementation of air pollution control policy.

(b) To advise and co-operate with the Resettlement Department in matters concerning the environmental hygiene of Resettlement Estates, Squatter Areas and Resite Areas.

(c) To abate sanitary nuisances by continuing routine house inspections and inspections of vacant building sites.

(d) To continue the daily chlorination of public wells.

(e) To continue to prevent breeding of malarial mosquitoes in the urban areas.

(f) To continue to extend the control of fly breeding in undeveloped areas.

(g) To ensure control of mosquito breeding.

(h) To control insects and animal pests which endanger public health.

(i) To press for the elimination of pig breeding from the urban areas, in the interests of public health.

Infectious Diseases

15. (a) To continue to assist the Medical and Health Department in the control of infectious diseases.

(b) To continue to investigate outbreaks of food poisoning.

(c) To continue regular checks on the chlorination and storage of water in food premises.

Ventilation

16. (a) To continue periodical checking of ventilation, including air conditioning, in scheduled premises.

(b) To finalize amendments to the principal Ordinance to ensure more efficient control of ventilation systems in scheduled premises.

Health Education

17. (a) With the support of voluntary organizations and other Government departments to promote health education by all available means including:

(i) Organizing public health education contests and projects, and participating in public exhibitions; and

(ii) Sponsoring public health education campaigns and distributing leaflets and other material on subjects of public health importance.

(b) To introduce public health training courses for the public, in particular youth groups, and to intensify publicity for the need for such courses.
