HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL
Since then the Select Committee has considered the matter but feels that information on the existing facilities and potential premises for reading rooms is required before detailed discussion takes place.
To this end enquiries have been directed to
(a) the Director of Education who has been requested to
(i) supply information on the existing provision of reading rooms in schools for students to study after school hours and during holidays, and
(ii) make an assessment on the real need for such facilities, especially for those students living in overcrowded resettlement areas and the older tenements.
Enquiries have also been directed to
(b) the Secretary for Chinese Affairs who has been asked to contribute information about the existing reading room faci- lities provided by Kaifong Associations and other voluntary organizations, such as their number, locality, size and number of books.
Enquiries have also been directed to
(c) the Director of Social Welfare who has been invited to inform the Library Select Committee about the actual use of existing reading rooms (their sizes, locality and the availability of potential premises) run by his Department or by voluntary organizations associated with his Department.
The Library Select Committee and the Recreation and Amenities Select Committee have, in the meantime, agreed to convert the first floor of barrack building No. 4, Whitfield Barracks, into a reading room. This will be a pilot scheme to put to trial the reading room service and to assess the real need for such facilities.
