HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

CHAIRMAN: -Very well, Sir, I will ask Dr. van de LINDE if he knows the answer.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF MEDICAL AND HEALTH SERVICES:-Mr. Chairman, I think the answer to the question is in the negative. The Building Authority was not concerned because it does not involve the installation of machinery, nor does it involve serving the public on the premises. Therefore there is no particular need to refer it to the Building Authority.

DR. LEE: -I believe that one member of this Council can support me when I say that there is a definite place where a kitchen can be sited on that particular floor.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF MEDICAL AND HEALTH SERVICES:-I beg your pardon?

DR. LEE:-I said there is a specific area on that floor which can be used as a kitchen.

CHAIRMAN:-Dr. LEE, this is not a question, this is a statement by you.

MR. CHEONG-LEEN:-Sir, on a point of order, since Dr. van de LINDE has answered the supplementary asked by Dr. LEE, could it be noted for the record that the supplementary which you ruled out of order was in fact in order?

CHAIRMAN:-Sir, your remarks will be recorded in the Hansard.

MR. CHEONG-LEEN:-Thank you.

MR. BERNACCHI:-Sir, is there any legislation as to factory chimneys in Hong Kong?

CHAIRMAN:-Sir, would you be prepared to ask that question at next month's meeting?

MR. BERNACCHI:-Yes, Sir. Perhaps the answer will be the same in regard to my next question. (Laughter).

In respect to factories which come under the jurisdiction of this Council as to licensing, do we have powers to make by-laws to cover the construction of chimneys?

CHAIRMAN: -Yes, Sir, your supposition was exactly correct. (Laughter).

(5) Dr. R. H. S. LEE asked the following question:-

Has the Chairman received any recent information as to the final arrival date of the Yorkshire sweeper ordered last year? In view of recent events in the United Kingdom does this mean the proposal to carry out experiments with the two machines regarding feasibility will be further delayed?

THE CHAIRMAN replied as follows:

I am glad to be able to inform the Council that the machine arrived on 2nd June and that trials are expected to begin shortly.

DR. LEE: -How long was the date of the arrival of this machine from the time when it was reported to the Select Committee?

CHAIRMAN:-Would you repeat that Sir?

DR. LEE: I said, how late was the machine in its arrival.

CHAIRMAN: -Sir, I do not think I quite understand your question. Is it another way of asking whether the Environmental Hygiene Select Committee was previously informed of the arrival of this machine?

DR. LEE:-No, I want to correct that impression. The Environmental Hygiene Select Committee was informed that the approximate date of arrival of the machine would be some time at the end of February. Now it is 2nd June-is that right?

CHAIRMAN:-Sir, you have the advantage of me. I know nothing about an earlier estimated date of arrival. The only information that I have is that it came on a ship, the "Diomede", which arrived one day early. (Laughter).

(6) MR. H. CHEONG-LEEN asked the following question:

A number of residents living on Hong Kong island and in Kowloon have told me that they would like to visit with their children the new Chung Hom Kok Park in Stanley, but that there is no bus service leading direct to the park. Can arrangements be made with the China Motor Bus Company to provide regular bus service to this park, particularly on holidays and weekends?

THE CHAIRMAN replied as follows:

I have referred this request for a bus service to Chung Hom Kok Park to the Commissioner for Transport, and will let Members know the outcome as soon as possible.
