"I understand that the occasional flooding around Shau Kei Wan Market is not caused in any way by the Market itself. I shall therefore refer this matter to the Public Works Department for consideration."

DR. R. H. S. LEE asked the following question :—

"In view of the general uncleanliness of the streets in Shau Kei Wan will the Chairman take steps to remedy it, and will special attention be given to scavenging collection points, particularly that in Mong Lung Street, where the condition is most unsatisfactory ?"

THE CHAIRMAN replied as follows :-

This concerns general cleanliness, scavenging, in Shau Kei Wan Village.

"I am afraid I cannot agree that the streets of Shau Kei Wan are generally unclean. They receive exactly the same scavenging service as elsewhere and appear no dirtier and no cleaner than other areas. Many of the side-streets in Shau Kei Wan are used by hawkers who tend to litter the street with discarded vegetables, peelings and other refuse, but the hawkers are sited away from the side channels so that scavenging can still continue during the day. There is in addition in the hawker areas from 6 p.m. to mid-night a night scavenging service which clears the sites effectively when hawking ceases at 10 p.m.

With particular reference to your complaint about Mong Lung Street, I agree that the surface at the northern end is in a poor state of repair and I am arranging for the refuse collection point to be moved to a fresh site in the immediate vicinity."

CHAIRMAN:

ADJOURNMENT.

That is all for today, gentlemen. That concludes the business of the meeting. Council stands adjourned until Tuesday, 7th October. Thank you very much.
