HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL
MINUTES.
The Minutes of the meeting of the Council held on 4th February, 1958 were confirmed.
PAPERS.
THE CHAIRMAN laid upon the table the following papers :— Report on the work of the Urban Council and Urban Services Department for the month of February, 1958.
He said: I understand that the Chairman of the Car Parks Select Committee wishes to address the Council briefly in amplification of that part of the report which deals with the work of that Committee.
MR. R. C. LEE :-As Chairman of the Multi-Storey Car Park Select Committee I wish to say a few words about the Multi-Storey Car Park charges. When the Committee last met it could not find any new ground for reducing the charges during office hours. It has, however, modified the ordinary charges by splitting the charges of $2 for 10 hours into fifty cents for each 2¼ hours. This splitting will give the car owner thirty minutes more for his first fifty cents, and reduces the charges by fifty cents for a car parking for 7 hours. This is not a reduction in charges but simply by co-ordinating charges with time.
The proposal for monthly tickets will, I am sure, be welcomed by all car owners, as constant users of the Car Park will not have to waste time by making payments when cars leave the Car Park each time. This proposal will also be of interest to commercial organizations. The monthly ticket will enable staff cars to make use of the car park at a reasonable price. This will allow the cars to be on hand for use at any time during office hours.
QUESTIONS.
MR. H. CHEONG-LEEN asked the following question :
"On a recent visit to the Lo Fu Ngam Estate, I have noticed that this Estate is developing very rapidly; as I understand that a site has been reserved for the building of a Government school, has the Commissioner for Resettlement recently brought to the attention of the Education Department the need for the early provision of education facilities in this area ?”
CHAIRMAN:--This is primarily a matter for the Education Department, but a written reply has been supplied.
"This is not strictly speaking a matter for this Council. The Director of Education has however authorized me to state that one large primary school is to be built by the Government and one by a voluntary organization on two sites near Lo Fu Ngam Resettlement Estate, and that work on these buildings will probably be starting in the late summer or autumn of this year."
MR. CHEONG-LEEN:- am very happy with the answer to the question. This is the first time in months I do not seem to have justification for a supplementary question.
CHAIRMAN:-Thank you.
MR. LI YIU BOR asked the following question :—
"As a result of the rapid development of the Colony, the two government mortuaries, one at Hill Road and the other at Waterloo Road, are now situated in the heart of the urban area; will the Chairman seek the co-operation of the Medical Department to re-site them at an early date in order to improve the amenity of the districts concerned?"
CHAIRMAN:~ This is primarily a matter for the Medical Department, but a written answer has been supplied.
"As your question implies, Sir, this is not, strictly speaking, a matter for this Council but the Director of Medical and Health Services has been good enough to supply the following information—
Arrangements have already been made for the re-siting of the Waterloo Road public mortuary in an area adjacent to the Urban Services Department Cemetery Depot at Hung Hom. Construction is expected to begin on 8th March, this year. The question of the rebuilding of Victoria Mortuary is under consideration."
