Canton Old Imperial Maritime Custom House: (probably before the constit- ution of the foreign serviced Maritime Customs). View of official reception room and East and West gates of the building. Official in sedan chair is seen leaving the compound accompanied by his retinue of Lictors, Soldiers, etc. Yellow flags to right and left of the picture bear the inscription "By Imperial Decree, the Yueh Hai-Kuan (Canton Sea Barriers)". Native artist. No date early 19th century, 1820-1840?

Shanghai: View of the Bund from the Pootung side of the river: oil painting of Shanghai in its earliest days (later than the one reproduced in Dr. Morse's "International Relations of the Chinese Empire", but much more detailed) The view is from the French Consulate along the Bund to the British Consulate-General and the old (rooden) Garden Bridge.
