HONG KONG AT THE BRITISH INDUSTRIES FAIR, 1951

NOTES FOR THE SECRETARY OF STATE'S SPEECH AT THE SAVOY HOTEL, 2nd May, 1951.

1.

This is the fourth year in which Hong Kong has ex-

hibited at the British Industries Fair. Once again a large delegation of merchants and manufacturers (120) has arrived

in the United Kingdom led by Mr. U Tat Chee, Vice Chairman

of the Chinese Manufacturers' Union, and Chairman of the Hong

Kong Preserved Ginger Distributors Limited. This will be

Mr. U Tat Chee's third visit to the United Kingdom in connection

with British Industries air matters, and the second occasion

on which he has been Leader.

2.

Mr. U Tat Chee is very well-known in England as a

prominent Hong Kong resident. It was noted with satisfaction

recently that he had been appointed to the Court of Hong Kong

University. His Majesty's Governinent has made handsome grants

(£500,000) to the University. Mr. U Tat Chee has also shown

great concern for the welfare of the workers in his Ginger

Factory by providing free education, not only for the children,

but for their parents also. He has sponsored a non-profit-

making housing scheme, which shows yet again the degree of

confidence he holds in the future of Hong Kong. A booklet

describing this housing scheme is attached.

3.

The delegation visits us this year to obtain raw

materials and consumer goods for Hong Kong. The raw materials

are mostly chemicals and metals for use in local industries, and

the consumer goods for herself and for distribution throughout

South East Asian markets. In addition, the delegates will seek

to show at the British Industries Fair the banking, insurance,

shipping and merchanting services which Hong Kong can offer.
