CONFIDENTIAL

Dear Bigg,

I wonder whether you could possibly assist us in any way on the following matter which has been brought to my notice.

During the war, while Hongkong was suffering under Japanese occupation, our Manager there advanced currency to Mr. E. Wynne Jones, an employee of the Hongkong Government, who like our staff, was an internee. Altogether Mr. Wynne Jones received currency to the value of £450 sterling and he issued a cheque in favour of our Company for this amount as a token of his indebtedness. At the conclusion of the war we endeavoured to obtain repayment of the money so advanced but we were unsuccessful and we understand that Mr. Wynne Jones left Hongkong owing a considerable amount of money and he was unable to pay his debts. He did promise our Manager that he would call and

the Managing Director here in London in the Spring of 1948 but he failed to make an a pearance.

When this matter was taken up with Mr. Wynne Jones in Hongkong he stated that a large portion of the currency which he received was distributed to members of the Hongkong Post Office who were internees and he further added that he had been endeavouring to arrange for the Government to refund the sterling equivalent or collect it from the employees concerned. He added also that he had been unsuccessful in this regard. While we think that it is very likely that Mr. Wynne Jones did pass on a portion of this money, we do feel that he has evaded his obligatior to us.
