Examination of available data indicates a preponderance of males in all age groups below 50 years.
More than three-quarters of the total population live in the cities of Victoria and Kowloon which are in effect, one city divided into two parts by the harbour which varies in width from one to three miles. The remainder of the population live in a number of villages of varying sizes, some of which are markets for agricultural produce, others, fishing villages, A small proportion are employed full time in agriculture.
The population is almost entirely Chinese in origin including a very large proportion of refugees from near and distant parts of China, The ratio of Chinese to Non-Chinese excluding the armed forces is roughly 141 to 1, the Non-Chinese element being made up of a variety of different races : British, Portugese, Indians etc. Non-Chinese element is obviously insufficient to influence the statistiss.
