Secretariat file 46/2321/49. Colonial Office 54453/2.

SAVINGRAM

To the Secretary of State for the Colonies.

From the Governor, Hong Kong. Date 26th September, 1949..

Your savingram 835 of 31st August and my 501 of 27th June.

I have examined these two cases carefully and it is with great regret that I must answer, as in the case of Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Bird, that nothing can be done for these people from Hong Kong funds.

(5) 54453/1/104/49

The War Memorial Fund only concerns those disabled while engaged in military or civil defence, or their dependents, in the case of those killed or who died from wounds, torture etc.

If either of these couples had a son killed or disabled in Hong Kong defence they would qualify for assistance, but I presume that if this had been so they would have mentioned it in their letters.

I am passing Mr. Allison's case to the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
