Hong-Kong Transportation Claims
Thank you for your letter referenced 54447/5/50 of 1st instant about the progress of these claims and I think you will be glad to know that we have just had Treasury authority to make further interim payments of £40,000 for the Kowloon-Canton (Brit. Section) Railway claim, and £1,400 for, the Hong Kong War Supplies Board claim, a total of £41,400. As I cannot recognise the amount of £12,500 to which you refer in your letter, except to say that an identical sum was paid as an interim measure to the War Supplies Board as long ago as March, 1950, I feel I should set out at some length the manner by which these latest interim payments have been calculated. I should perhaps say now, that for the purpose of arriving at these figures, we are still regarding 3% of the £105,000 claimed by Hong Kong for the 600 railway wagons, as a War Damage liability on this assumption we are the following
