Requisitioned railway materials: Kowloon Canton
Railway (British Section) claim.

The following information has been obtained from the Railway Mechanical Engineer, Mr. J.K. Wong, who was the Assistant Mechanical Engineer in 1941 and was particularly concerned with the work of making missing parts for the 600 wagons. This information is based partly on evidence from documents he has seen and from his memory.

The contracts for making various castings were awarded to the South China Iron Works and the Liu Hou Kou Iron Works. Details of the number of parts ordered from the South China Iron Works have been obtained but the other company has now gone out of business. Mr. Wong has, however, seen some unsigned copies of a summary of its contract which shows that the Liu Hou Kou Iron Works was asked to manufacture 390 tons at 82 per lb. He confirms that the rate was correct. The South China Iron Works confirm that the rate paid to that firm was 84 per lb. because the castings it was asked to make were lighter and slightly more difficult. There was also a maximum allowance of 31% overweight in castings which is the normal allowance for this type of work.
