Apartment, even our trunks and stores, they would not

reveal to her where I was confined, saying that it was a

"Military Secret". My Wife gave full details of this

interview to Mr. Price for his report.

Reverting to Tuesday, March 3rd 1942, at 2.30 p.m. I

was taken out of the closet, in a very weak condition and

could scarcely stand. The Officer in charge of the In-

vestigation proceeded immediately to question me but was

unable to proceed owing to my condition, and left me until

the next day. That night I was locked into the bedroom

and given food. The following two days, Wednesday and

Thursday, the examination continued in this room with the

same people. On Thursday March 5th in the evening the

Investigation was finished and I was informed at 9.30 p.m.

by the Officer in Charge that they were satisfied and I

would be released, this was after 11 days confinement by

them.

I would state I was over 60 years of age when I was

arrested by them and have been a resident of Shanghai for

over 20 years, and my health was seriously affected by

their inhuman and barbarous treatment, necessitating

medical care for some time after. I am English, born of

English parents in Plymouth, Devon, England, and I would

request that you, as Protecting Consul in Charge of

British Interests in Shanghai, place the foregoing Report

with the British Government with the request that

compensation be demanded by them from the Japanese Govern-

ment on my behalf for the actions of its responsible

Officers at my estimate of One Thousand Pounds Sterling
