You wrote to me on the 1st May about the late Mr. C.E. Gahagan.

As Fletcher said in his letter of the 12th April to Mr. Gabagan's solicitor there is no scheme of compensation from Hong Kong funds for var damage in the Colony: you may like to see the enclosed statement giving the reasons for thim.

There is, however, a scheme in existence, financed by Ela Majesty' a Government and adainistered by the Board of Trade, under which limited ex-gratia payments may be made to United Kingdom British subjects who suffered losses of their private chattels in the Far Eastern territories and who have returned to set up home permanently in the United Kingdom, The sche:10 is known as the Extended Far Eastern Private Chattels Sebeme (War Damage). I enclose an explanatory extract from Hansard and an application form, which you may care to paas on to Mrs. Gahagan's solicitors. If Hro. Gabagan decides to apply, she should return the completed form to the Colonial öffice at the address given at the foot of the fora.

I return all the papers you forwarded.

(8gd) J. Griffiths.
