Extended Far Eastern Private Chattels Scheme War Damage)
In Mr. Slade's absence I am replying to your letter of the 18th May concerning Mr. Alan Fancey's war damage losses in Hong Kong, and I suggest that your authorities in Australia reply on the following lines:-
"Regarding your claim in respect of your private possessions lost or damaged in Hong Kong as a result of the war, I an to refer to the statement issued by the Government of Hong Kɔng, a copy of which is enclosed. As explained in the statement, the Hong Kong Gov rment recommended that no compensation should be paid for war damnge. In these circumstances it is regretted that no payment can be made from the Hong Kong Government Funds in respect of the war damage compensation claims. The statement is, of course, not concerned with any cláins where a legal liability my be involved and any such clains should be referred direct to the Government of Hong Kong.
I have to add that in order to meet the difficulties of United Kingdom British Subjects who have suffered loss of private chattels in the occupied British territories in the Far Past and
