Dear Mr. Archer,
You will recall that in my letter of 12th May, I transmitted to you for consideration by your Company certain proposals made by the Governor of Hong ong concerning the terms on which the termina- tion of the Company's contract with the Hong Kong Government might be arranged. In your letter of (9)17th May, you were good enough to indicate that an
arrangement on these lines would be acceptable to your Company, and, after raising one or two points of detail, you enquired whether our exchange of letters could be accepted by the Hong Kong Governmen as formal termination of the contract. is I told (10) you in my letter of 29th May, we referred the con-
tents of your letter to the Governor by air mail, and undertook to inform you of his reply as soon as possible.
I am afraid that correspondence with the Governor has taken longer than we expected.
It is clear from the Governor's reply that it will not be possible to treat our exchange of letter in May as formal termination of the contract, the
