The first e Treasury grant was given, years ago as a gesture by the United Kingdom Government towards the rehabilitation and development of the University which was extensively damaged and looted during the war.

The money was untouched pending discussions between the United Kingdom Government, the Hong Kong Government and the University authorities on detalled proposals for reconstruction.

These plans, weste modified, from time to time in the light offertsaiscussions resurted in a minimum

devel9pment programme involving a capital expenditure of at least £500,000.

The new allotment of £250,000, now made available from funds set aside for higher education under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act of 1945, will increase the sum to £500,000 which is in respect of capital expenditure only.
