Further grant of £200,000 under Scheme No. D.1557

In continuation of the grant of £50,000 made under Colonial Development and Welfare Scheme No. D.1557 for the rehabilitation and development of University buildings, the Governor has furnished details of the financial assistance required from 1950 to 1953 for
2.
(1) the erection and furnishing of the new Vice-Chancellor's Lodge,
(2) the ereption of the Duncan Sloss School of Engineering and
Architecture,
(3) the erection of a block of 8 flats for senior staff.
(4) the erection of an extension to the main building and Great Hall,
(5) the erection of a new students' Union,
(6) the provision of miscellaneous equipment, books and journals,
and for minor rehabilitation work,
(7) the erection of a chemistry building,
(8) the erection of a pathology building, and
(9) the erection of further staff flats.
The final estimate of expenditure over the three years from 1950 to 1953 totals £501,533, and the Governor has now submitted an application for the remaining £400,000 which His Majesty's Government has agreed to set aside (i.e. £200,000 from Colonial Development and Welfare funds from the Higher Education Allocation and £200,000 from C. and M.E.S. Vote).

The proposals have received the approval of the Colonial University Grants Advisory Committee but the estimates are necessarily provisional at this stage and will prices rising une proposals can be regarded as only tentative, The estimates are slightly in excess of the total sum allocated but the Vice Chancellor of the University has stated that the University will either reduce its commitments to keep inside the limits of available funds, or meet the excess from other funds at its disposal,
