GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONG KONG.

24th February, 1950.

Dear Sidebotham,

Side

Thank you for your letter No. 54147/49 of the

7th February regarding the Hong Kong University. I think

it would be fatal both from the point of view of the

University and of the Colony if the University were to

become an Anglo-American institution. Financial grants

from American sources, e.g. Rockefeller, for particular

projects is a different matter, nor do I see any objection

to some of the staff being non-British - there are already

some such but the University should remain predominantly

British. I have discussed the matter with Ride who agrees

with these views.

J.B. Sidebotham, Esq., C.M.G.,

Yours ever,

Mhandan.
