Begine. "HONG KONG UNIVERSITY.
Great Britain has made a second gift of a quarter of a million pounds to Hong Kong University. was winounced by the Colonial Office yesterday (here 1:sert date).

The first - a Troasury grant was given two years ago as a gesture by the United Kingdom Government towards the rehabilitation ami development of the University which was extensively damaged and looted Juring the war,
The money was untouched pending discussions between the United Kingdom Goverment, the Hong Kong Government and the University authorities on detailed proposals for reconstruction.
Plans for developing the University had already been drawn up in 1948 by a Committee appointed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies. These plans, with
the aubsequent discussions, resulted in a minimum development programe involving & capitel expenditure of at least £500,000.
The now allotment of £250,000, now made available from funds set aside for higher education under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act of 1945, will increase the sum to £500,000".
