With reference to your letter to Clough of 21st March, 1950, reference 54126/14/50, regarding the possible supplementary financial settlement between His Majesty's Government and Hong Kong, I confirm that so far as the War Office is aware, the facts and figures in your draft telegram to Hong Kong are correct.
Although the stores and supplies handed over by the Military Administration on transfer to civil government became merged into the general stock of civil affairs stores and supplies and accountable as such, we have in fact received some £15,176 in respect of the sale of B.M.A. stores which we shall be paying over to the Treasury as E.E. R. in the near future. It is possible that this sum is not included in the figures given in your draft telegram. The amount, however, is insignificant.
The War Office interest in the matter generally is now very small and we are, of course, still less concerned in the apportionment of the proceeds from the sales of the Siam "Free"
Rice.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Clough.
