FURTHER ACTION.

(2)

HI

For Mr. Dawson's Signature.

Dear Mr. Mitchell,

Thank you for your letter of the 29th March Claims arising out of the work of

regarding/the Hong Kong War Supplies Board.

ing

Since

I wrote to Keswick on the 27th January, the Department

has been giving further examination to this problem with

a view to ascertaining to what extent (if any)

liability can be considered as resting on either H.M.G.

This has proved to be a bigger

or other Governments. a considerable

task, then was expected, as naturally other Departments

Look

have to be consulted, and while some progress has

+

<been made (to which I refer below), I fear I am not

yet in a position to notify you of the final outcome-

in all e&500,

2.

You are, I assume, aware of the payment of £150,000

made by the Ministry of Supply on the 25th March, 1948,

for credit to the Hong Kong Government in respect of

supplied to the Eastern Group Sunshoy Council. stores actually delivered to the Ministry of Supply.

As

(25/48 and 8/49) regards the claim for $3,410,744 (£213,172) in

Shop & Supplied to the fremment respect of stores delivered India in the last months

of 1941, it appears that liability for meeting this

particular claim may be on the Government of India.

We have accordingly telegraphed to Hong Kong suggesting

(9) that they should again approach the Government of India

and ask if a settlement could now be effected.

If

this proves to be unsuccessful, we shall have to

consider what other action can be taken in the matter.
