the settlement
Dr. Hsu was to inform his Company of this proposed by the
War office proposal and, since nothing further
has been heard, it is presumed that they are
still awaiting a decision from the Chinese Ministry
of Communications.

5. As a result of the meeting at the war Office
on the 12th August it emerged that besides the
claims for £323,689 covered by Vouchers 003, 004,
additional 006, 007 and 008 and the further £29,769 covered
by the missing voucher 005, the Chinese had
presented a much larger claim for £942,449, said
to be detailed on Vouchers 009, 010 and onl,
in respect of railway materials which though
not specifically requisitioned, were, by order
of the Hong Kong Goverment in 1941, prevented
from being removed from Hong Kong and thus lost
when the Colony fell. Hsu was informed that
neither the War office nor this Department
had received copies of this larger claim
which in the War Office view is in any event
not likely to concern them.
I should however be grateful for further
information about this claim and the action
being taken thereon.
