The total claim against the Hong Kong Government

1a, therefore, £ 1,295,907, 18, 0.

The claims were referred by the Hong Kong Govern- ment to H.M.Colonial Office in Londen who, in turn, referred them to the War Office for settlement.

The J.E.C. have made repeated efforts by appli- cation to the Hong Kong Government, the Colonial orrice and the War Office to obtain settlement of the claims but, so far, have been unsuccessful in doing so.

The Chinese Government,"Ministry of Communications, is now showing impatience and feels that as two and a half years have elapsed since the cessation of hostilities, the British Government ought to be in a position to affect a settlement.
