Dear Mussett,
20 July, 1948.
Thank you for sending me a copy of your letter of 2nd July to a s about the Chinese Government claim in respect of railway material requisitioned in Hong Kong in 1941, and our claim against the Chinese Government in respect of the Kowloon properties.
2 So far as concerns the Chinese Government's claim through the Jardine Ingineering Company, I think the total of the claim will have to be taken as 2353,458 and not £323,689; the difference of £29,769 which, as you say, crept in after the main claim had been submitted relates to steel beams, plates, etc. shipped to the Middle East and is covered by Jardine's invoice numbered 005, which was, I understand, sent to the ar Office by the crown
gents for the Colonies in ugust, 1947. We have heard nothing at all direct from Hong Kong about the further claim of Jadine's for £942,449 to which you refer, and we propose, when explaining the general position to the Governor, to enquire about this.

3 As regards the Kowloon properties, we are glad that the ar uffice propose to accept responsibility for satisfying the claim, subject to later recovery from the Chinese Government, and we hope that Tre sury authority will be forthcoming. The actual amount of the claim, originally lodged through the British mbassy, Nanking, 18 X(H.K.) 2,461,891.13, equivalent to £153,868.48. sterling, but we will obtain final confirmation from Hong Kong.
