My dear Scarlett,
KING KAN (NANKING-KIANGSI) RAILWAY MATERIALS LOAN 1936.
The story of the advance made by the Hongkong & Shanghai
Banking Corporation for the purchase of these Railway Materials
was sent by me to Coates on the 3rd September last
F12273/152/10
I append a note given me by Katheson & Co.Ltd., regarding 1947
the Railway Material requisitioned in Hongkong in 1941; I am informed that the Chinese Ministry of Communications are
claiming compensation for the requisitioning of this Material,
in fact we have received an account from the Chungking-Chengtu
Railway for the sum of £26,550 in payment of part of these
requisitioned goods.
Part of these Materials pertained to the King-Kan Railway
Loan, but I have no information at present of the details and
value of this Material, and it has been suggested that this
will only be obtainable from the Chinese Ministry of Communications.
However, we wish to register our claim to any payment which
the British Government may make on account of these particular
Materials; a large debt is due to us by the Chinese Government,
which, up to date, they have made no attempt to repay, and our
view is that any refund made to the Chinese Government on account
