No. 115.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
6 End
th
HONG KONG.
30 June, 1949.
Sir,
I have the honour to request your approval for the grant on special terms to the Salesian Society of Hong Kong of certain land adjacent to the Society's present establishment at Shaukiwan. The Society wishes to erect school buildings on this land and to transfer to them the school at present accommodated in the Mission buildings which would then revert to their original use as a training centre for Chinese priests of the Order.
2.
The Society purchased Shaukiwan Inland Lot No.495 on which their existing buildings stand, at public auction but without competition in 1932. Its use is restricted to a scholastic and religious institution. Adjacent to this lot is Garden Lot 83 held by the Society on a 21 year lease expiring in July 1953. Close to this is another Garden Lot numbered 97 held by the Society on a 21 year lease expiring 6th September, 1959. The Both these leases appear to have been acquired at auction. area which the Society wishes to purchase is adjacent to Garden Lot 97 and measures about 23,200 sq.ft. As the grant of this area would mean that these two Garden Lots could not later be dealt with independently it is proposed to grant Garden Lot 83 as an extension of the main Lot S.I.L. 495, on payment of normal premium less that already paid for the Garden Lot lease, and normal crown rent, to obtain the surrender of Garden Lot 97 and grant that area plus the new area applied for as one lot on the following terms:-
3.
(i) Nominal Premium.
(ii) Normal Crown Rent at $1,000 per acre per annum.
(iii) Building Covenant $300,000 in 18 months.
(iv) User to be restricted to a non-profit making school.
(v) No assignment without my consent.
The existing school charges fees of $8 p.m. but there are many free places. It is reliably run and there is no question of a profit being made. I am satisfied that this Society merits assistance from Government in connection with the school and I recommend the above proposal for your approval.
