No. 293.

نا

Sir,

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONG KONG.

29th November, 1948.

/

I have the honour to request permission for the grant by private treaty to the Tung Lin Kok Yuen Temple Po Kok Free School of a piece of land measuring 6,700 square feet at Shan Kwong Road, Wongneichong, Hong Kong, on the terms and conditions set out in the enclosure for the purpose of providing a playground for the school.

2.

The school is a charitable one, charging no fees and receiving no Government grant, but is inadequately endowed to enable it to purchase land for this purpose at public auction. The land in question is immediately adjacent to the school building and forms part of an area which was occupied by the school on a 5 year permit issued in January 1939. The intention was that the whole area amounting to 20,000 square feet should be used as a playground, but it appears that during the occupation of the Colony it was converted into a vegetable garden and was never used for the purpose intended.

3.

The entire area has now been divided up into building lots, one of which has already been sold at public auction, but it is proposed that three of the small lots so created which are immediately in front of the school should be granted to it for the purpose and on the conditions which I have indicated above.

4.

Sir Robert Ho Tung has promised to donate $50,000 for the construction of the playground if this grant is made.

5.

I would appreciate an early indication of your approval to enable the school to proceed with their plans and to facilitate the disposal of the remainder of the area.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

Mhantom.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

ARTHUR CREECH JONES, M.P.

Enclosure.

GOVERNOR.
