Dear Mr Coates,

O CLP

Your letter of the 4th Sept' under the above Ref N

Regarding our proposal that we should come back by sea, I don't know whether I ought to restate the reason that prompted this suggestion, but Mr Mcleavy and my self discussed it very fully with Mr Kitson and there appeared to be no difficulty. The attitude of the Treasury, in withdrawing the subsisitence for the period of our enforced stay in Singapore or is it the Treasur Ruling, that the subsistence a/m will be measured by the number of days taken to fly ?. Through you or through Mr Mayhew I should like to have it pointed out to the reasury that the cost of flying back is considerably greater than by ship or sea, if it is a balance they are aiming

-

at.

The ten days in Singapore, would be rather a diff- iculty, if we had no money, unless we could be granted the necess -ary facilities for lo king around that district by the Colonial Office. I had a word with Mr Creech Jones about the trip and he promised to be helpfull where-ever he could. Both Mcleavy and I are on the Far Eastern Committee and it would be a good chance to see Singapore at no extra cost or time. To leave us there aparently without help, with the cost of living asit is, isan- other way of telling us to come back by air or starve.

You are aware of the a/m of flyin, we shall have to do, and we don't mind but coming back we can see more and have a rest and at less cost. Will you please have a look at this matter, as I cannot be in London, just now.

My final decision will be conditioned by Mr Mcleay

and what can be arranged at Singapore.

Regarding finance, I obtained £45 in Travellers Cheques last week and I have no other currency, only I was told to apply to the B.0, A. C for £5 worth of their vouchers to spend en-route. Will you please make an equiry about this matter, as I am leaving for Guernsey, this week end and I shoudl be obliged if you will forward any letter to me, from the 7th to the 2nd to Mrs, H. F. Lynch. Chaumette Farm. Forest. Guernsey.CI.

Lwarely Varinam

Yours Lewarely

James
