These areas have now reverted to Chinese administration

and control (See No.8) and British firms there no

longer enjoy any extra-territorial rights, though

cxisting British property rights are guaranteed under

the 1943 Sino-British Treaty. Chinese nationalistic

tendencies, increased by the pressure of vested interests

(c.g. rival Chinese shipping companies) have greatly

hampered the carrying on of business by our firms.
