20th May 1943. A similar treaty was signed by the
United States Government about the same date,
and subsequently by the French, Netherland and other
Governments.
4. Under the terms of this treaty, His Majesty's
Government relinquished all rights to exercise
jurisdiction over British nationals and companies
in China, and these became subject to Chinese
jurisdiction in accordance with the principles of
international law and practice.
The treaty also
provides for the International Settlements at
Shanghai and Amoy and the British concessions at
Tientsin and Canton to revert to Chinese administration
and control, and for the opening of negotiations for
a comprehensive treaty of friendship, commerce,
navigation and consular rights. In an annexed exchange
of notes His Majesty's Government also relinquished
rights of coasting trade and inland navigation,
and the rights relating to entry of British naval
vessels into Chinese waters; most favoured nation:
treatment was granted to British ocean shipping
entering Chinese ports open to foreign trade, and
visits of naval vessels were permitted in future
only on a normal basis of international courtesy.
5.As regards the commercial treaty, it was
provided in Article 8 of the Sino British Treaty
of 1943 (see paragraph 3 above) that negotiations
for the conclusion of "a comprehensive modern treaty,
