ENCLOSURES
FURTHER ACTION
Dear Sloss,
On looking further into the proposal to reduce the grant to Hong Kong University from C.D. & A. funds from 2400,000 to £200,000 in the light of the notes which you so kindly sent me on September 26th, I am very doubtful whether there is anything for us to say to the Secretary of the Grants Advisory Committee in response to his enquiry as to whether we have any comments to offer on the proposed ředuction. I note that your estimate of the non- qecurring charges is £225,000, and I imagine that it might be possible to get the amount of the Hong Kong dontribution up to £255,000 when the allocations for Hong Kong and Malaya are reviewed in relation to the recommendations of the forthcoming report of the
ommission on University education in Malaya.
However, we are going further into this and You may rest assured that if there is any ground on
hich we think we can successfully ask for an increase in the amount proposed for Hong Kong University, we shall not hesitate to make the necessary representations.
Thank you very much for letting me have the notes for the memorandum on the Salaries Commission Report. We will now get out the memorandum and have copies circulated to all concerned.

DR. D. J. SLOSS, GER.
