HONG KONG

NO.

79.

Sir,

Colonial Office,

Downing Street, S.W.1.

Ano'd (7)

3 March, 1947.

I have the honour to refer to your despatch No. 249 or the 31st December, 1946, on the subject of the repair of the Queen Victoria Statue in Hong Kong.

2. Enquiries have been made through the Crown Agents for the Colonies, and I enclose a report on the subject from the Morris-Singer Company, a firm of art-metal founders, amongst whose recent work was the custing of the bronze statue of King George V commissioned in connection with the proposed centenary celebrations. It will be seen that the firm consider that the only setisfactory way of repairing the statue of Queen Victoria involves returning it to this country but thede-alternative proposals are suggested if you feel that this is impracticable.

3. In the event of your deciding not to return the statue to this country ior repair, I understand it will be necessary to supply photographs of it, in the original condition, to enable the design for the missing portions to be carried out.

GOVERNOR,

SIR MARK YOUNG, G.C.M.G.,

etc., etc.,
