Your telegram No. 686 of 1946. (3)

Disposal of Crown Lands,

Owing to the high cost of labour and non-availability of steel and fittings, housing schemes have not been formulated as rapidly as was hoped.

2,

It has recently become apparent that certain schemes are likely to come to fruition during the course of next year, providing sponsors have some hope of obtaining land at a reasonable cost. This applies also to individual citizens desirous of building for their own occupation.

3.

Would-be builders are seriously deterred by high price fetched at auction of Crown Land and in private transfers of property. I therefore request extension of period during which I may dispose of Crown Land without auction, for the purpose of approved housing schemes, for a further year from 1st August, and that concession should be extended to cover individual building to be subject to suitable precautions to prevent exploitation by speculators.
