told how much baggage I could take with me. I was about
20 feet from the scene of the fire. I saw two passengers
One was a woman carrying two sacks on a ban boo
pole and the other was a man carrying a bag made of straw
matting. Something broke in the bag carried by the man
and some liquid flowed from the bag on to the deck
and smoke followed almost immediately. At first there
was a small quantity of smoke and people from the fruit
stall started to use the fire extinguishers. More smoke
followed. I then ran forward. The liquid flowed on
the deck and went underneath the baggage. The smoke was
yellowish and white in colour. The cargo port was block-
ed by the crowd so I had to remain on board the vessel.
There xxx were passage ways between the baggage. Hui
Yuen is a relative of mine and we were stood together.
I bought my ticket between 4 5 on the afternoon of
Saturday the 31st January, 1948.
The foregoing is a true record
of the evidence I have given.
