EVIDENCE OF CHAN SING YAU
ON BOARD THE "KWONG TUNG"

My name is Chan Sing Yau and I was a seaman employed
on board the "Kwong Tung" at the time of the casualty.
I heard I was in my cabin when the fire broke out.
a noise and shouts indicating there was a rire in the
after part of the sip. I went to the fire hose box on
the port side of the boat deck and after laying out the
hose I tried to walk down the stairway with the nose but
was prevented by doing so by the smoke coming up which
was white and yellowish. I tried to get down the starboard
stairway leading from the upper deck to the main deck.
then dropped the hose over the side and climbed down hose

myself and directed the has through the window on to the
fire. In about fifteen minutes the fire was extinguished.
I saw 5 fire extinguishers, which had been used, and which
were lying flat on the deck near the scene of the fire. I
could not see clearly because of the smoke and I was
engaged in putting out the fire.
The window I refer to was an open grille.
When I directed the hose I was about 8 feet from
the fire. I was not affected by the moke for the wind
blew it away from the side I was on.
I agree that the smoke would tend to cause panic.
