ALLOWANCES.

20. In general, apart from high cost of living allowances, allowances will only be prescribed in rospect of: -

(1) reimbursable expenditure incurred in performance of duty;

ii) duties extraneous to normal duties;

(iii) special risks.

21.

Since en element for rent has been included in the rovised salaries, no rent allowances will be paid to officers who elect to come on to the new terus. All officers occupy - ing Governmont quarters including Government leased rooms in hotels and hostels will be charged rent, the scales of which will be published in the near future. In no case will the deduction exceed one seventh of an officer's basic monthly salary (excluding expatriation pay) and in the majority of cases it will be substantially less.

No language allowances, as distinct from language allowances study allowances, will be paid to officers converting to the new terms and conditions of service and officers at present drawing language allowances in accordance with G.0.137 will cease to draw theri. Where officers are required by Government to learn a special dialect or language other than Cantone se for special duties, or to reach an unusually high standard in any language, c. bonus at rates to bo devised may be paid. Donus will be paid for the passing of any language examinations which may be prescribed for the passing of any probation, efficiency or promotion wars.

Fuel and Light.

NO

No fuel and light allowances will be paid to officers converting to the new terms of service, but those required to live in comunal barrack recomotion will not be, charged for fuel or light.

The present scales set out in General Order 104 for field, hard lying and lodging allowances are being revised and and

in future the so allowances will be payable only to cover the lodging

additional cost of food while an officer is compelled to be allowances, away from his headquarters overnight or the cost of lodging

where an officer is compelled to pay for overnight accommoda- tion.

Boot

Boot allowance will not be payable to officers allowance. converting to the new terms and condi tims of service and

instead boots or shoes of suitable pattern will be issued on an approved scale.

Acting pay will continue to be paid under the provisions of General Order No.90;

Language

Where officers are required or are given pormission to study a particular language, reasonable tuition expenses allowance. will continue to be paid by Government at appropriate rates.

Personal

allowances.

28.

All personal allowances will be discontinued.
