principle has been adopted that all officers,

including both those in the service before the outbreak of

hostilities in the Pacific and those recently appointed, are

deemed to have been on a salary of £260 per annum at the age

of 26 years, but in order to preserve the existing order of

seniority in the Force, which has been determined by promot-

ion between grades, adjustments in certain cases have been

necessary « Salaries at the rates are payable with effect

from 1st January, 1946. The pension or gratuity of any

officer who elects to retire now will be based on these

salaries. A temporary non-pensionable high cost of living

allowance is at present payable in accordance with Secretariat

Circular No. 30.

All members of the Force will appreciate that the

scheme of reorganisation will place greater demands than

formerly upon the European members of the Force. A very high

standard of conduct and efficiency will be demanded by the

Hong Kong Government from the reorganised Force: These facto-

rs should be carefully borne in mind by members of the Force

who are now given the option of retirement,

Your salary assessed on the above principles is £475

per annum and your position in the Seniority List is as shown

on the list published in Police Orders:
