Pensions. Subject to the provisions of the Hong Kong Police Pension Regulations

(a) Pension may be granted to an officer appointed to the permanent

establishment under 5(a) above who retires from the Police Force:-

(i)

(ii)

On or after attaining the age of 45 years and completing 15 years service; or

On a certificate from three Government Medical Officers that he is incapable by reason of some infirmity of body or mind of performing the duties of his office; or

(iii) On abolition of office.

(b) Pensions may be awarded at the rate of 14/50ths of salary for the first ten years service with an addition of 1/600th for each complete month of service in excess of ten years with a further addition of 1/600th in respect of each complete month of service beyond twenty years until the maximum pension of two-thirds of salary is reached.

(c) An officer who is retired on medical grounds and who has not

completed ten years service may be granted a gratuity in accordance with Police Pensions Regulations.

(a) An officer to whom a pension is granted may elect to draw a

reduced pension of three-quarters of such pension together with a cash gratuity equal to ten times the amount of the annual reduction so made in the pension. This option must be exercised by the officer within one month of his attaining pensionable status (i.e. ten years service).

(e) If a married officer is killed in the discharge of his duty, his

widow and orphans may be awarded a pension not exceeding 10/60ths of the officer's salary. This maximum may be exceeded in exceptional cases and would be in addition to any grant made wider sub-paragraph (f). A special pension may also be awarded on retirement to any officer who is permanently injured in the discharge of his duty and without his own default, and by some injury specifically attributable to the nature of his duties.

(f) If an officer dies whilst serving in the Police Force and before the date of his death has completed five years service, the Governor in Council may grant to his legal personal representative a gratuity not exceeding one year's pensionable salary of the deceased officer. Where an officer is killed in the discharge of his duty this grant may be made irrespective of the length of his service.

(g) All pensions shall, subject to the discretion of the Governor, be

payable in London.

Conditions in Hong Kong

(a) The climate is suitable for Europeans: there is a cool dry winter

and a well marked change of seasons. Humidity makes the Hong Kong summer trying: from November to March the climate is almost perfect. European children can safely remain until they are eight or nine years old. In pre-war days there were adequate facilities for schooling.

(b) Malaria, formerly prevalent, had been practically stamped out

before occupation by the Japanese. Present conditions are, however, unknown.
