Mr. Chestnut, an Inspector of Police in

the London Office of the Palestine Police Force

(telephone ABBey 2532) telephoned yesterday to say

that Mr. Gray, the Inspector-General of the Palestine

Police Force, had telephoned the London Office

informing them that he had recommended Mr. T.E.Clunie,

Acting Assistant Superintendent of Police, for

transfer to one of the vacancies in Hong Kong. He

followed this up with a telegram which the London

Cffice received today. Apparently he also sent a

telegram to Mr. Clunie asking him to call at their

London Office to obtain information regarding

conditions of service, salary etc. in Hong Kong.

He thought that the Colonial Office might also wish

to interview Mr. Clunie. The London Office has also

received a telegram from Mr. Clunie saying that he

will call on them tomorrow. He is coming down from

York. I gave Mr. Chestnut particulars of the post in

Hong Kong and informed him that there would be no

objection to communicating these to Mr. Clunie, but

that we could not act on this telephone message from

Jerusalem until we receive confirmation from the

High Commissioner, especially as there were other

candidates to be considered. I also told

Mr. Chestnut that if Mr. Clunie wished to have an

interview at the Colonial Office that he was at

liberty to call at Park Street and that he would be

seen
