WEEKLY SUMMARY OF HONGKONG PRESS REPORTS AND COMMENTS December 30, 1946 to January 5, 1947.
Chief Internal Events Reported.
Shui-cheung
Promise or $10,000 by Hong Kong Government to dependents of Wong
the peanut hawker in connection with whose death a member of the Hong Kong Police was charged with manslaughter -- was officially announced.
The "National Times" reported that the ports of Tsingtao, Kong- moon, Kwangchow-wan and Pakhoi are to be opened to foreign shipping.
The "Wah Kiu Yat Po" reported that ban on the export of textile goods is to be lifted.
There was very little news even of local importance in the Hong Kong press. The Canton press gave mild prominence to the schemes for new iron and steel works, the dredging of the Pearl River, and a proposed fleet of American ships to ply between Canton, Hong Kong and Shanghai,
The scarcity and high price of rice was noted in all papers.
The "Sing Tao Jih Pao" reported that the rape case involving an
American marine in Peiping got only brief notice.
The "Wah Kiu Yat Po' reported that an assault by two Britons on a Chinese taxi driver was alleged to have taken place in Canton.
2. Comments on Internal Events.
The need for purging the Chinese Banks and Customs of corrupt practices as a step to financial stability was urged by the "Wah Kiu Yat Po". The same paper said that slump in prices in Hong Kong is expected as a result of the dumping of cheap foreign (i.e. American) goods on local market; but it is thought that the Hong Kong wages level is higher than abroad.
The "Kung Sheung Daily News" reported that some modification of the Vegetable Control was envisaged, but no detail suggestions were made.
