WEEKLY SUMMARY OF HONG KONG PRESS REPORTS AND COMMENTS. February 24 to March 1, 1947.

Chief Internal Events Reported.

(a)

All authorities adjacent to Hong Kong are prohibiting export of rice. "Kung Sheung Daily Press" of Feb. 24 gives detail of measures to stop smuggling of rice, mainly into Hong Kong. "Sing Tao Jih Pao" of Feb. 27 prints news of prohibition of export from Macao.

Official rates of exchange are CN848,000 £1.

There is considerable movement of gold and U.S. Dollars. "Kung Sheung Daily Press" of Feb. 24 complains that there is now an 'economic concession' in Shanghai where hoarders are depositing gold and U.S. Dollars in foreign banks for safe custody. 'Wah Kiu Yat Po" of the same date reports that the general movement of gold is out of China "Hwa Shiang Pao" of Feb. 25 says that a consignment of 21,600 ounces of gold, understood to be enroute to China, was diverted at Hong Kong to India.

"Kung Sheung Daily Press" of Feb. 25 says that vaccination against smallpox is to be compulsory in Canton.

"Hwa Shiang Pao" of Feb. 25 reports that a Chinese steamship, the 'Po On' has sunk apparently without trace off Hainan. About 200 deaths are feared,

Comment on proposals to broaden the Chinese Government are very vague, and amount to little more than an intimation that re- organisation is contemplated.
