James Bertram is a New Zealander (about 36) who was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Headka First in Modern Greats and in 1936 was given a research scholarship from Oxford which took him to China.

As a result of his stay in China he has published two books on that country, namely "North China Front" and "Sian Crisis"

A third book "Shadow of a War" will be published shortly by Victor Gollancz in this country and by John Day in America.

During his stay in China he was well-known to Lord Inverchapel and for some period, when the Assistant Press Attaché was ill, Lord Inverchapel asked James Bertram to take his place in Chungking.

1940 1941.

At various periods from March 1938 until the out- break of the Pacific war, James Bertram assisted Madame Sun Yat-sen and the China Defence League.

James Bertram joined the Hong Kong Volunteers and was taken as a prisoner to Japan in 1942.

After he was repatriated to New Zealand, he was sent by the New Zealand Government as a member of their delegation to the Far Eastern Commission in Japan. After his return he wrote this book "Shadow of a War" and is now considering whether he should settle down as a University Professor or perhaps return to China in some capacity.
