Points in support of the proposed exper
United Kingdom funds.
The University, acting as a bridge between the
philosophies of Britain and China would be a powerful
agency in developing good relations between this country
and the Republic of China.

A University on the lines proposed would be
concrete proof of British friendship with China. There
are reliable indications that the Chinese Government
would welcome a University in Hong Kong on this broader
basis. During the Military Administration General
Chiang Kai Shek personally expressed to the Commander in
Chief his interest in its re-establishment.

The future prosperity and welfare of the British
community in China and the neighbouring territories will
be largely affected by the attitude and outlook of the
Chinese educated classes.

One of the greatost needs in the Far East in
the new conditions which are developing will be that of
skilled personnel. It seems probable that there will be
a rapid and intensive development of light industry in
these countries. Hong Kong is well situated through its University to make an effective contribution to the
trained man who will be needed and through them to spread
British influence and appreciation of the British way
of political thought.

The University could effectively supplement the
work of the British Council in China. Indeed the senior
representative of the Council there has stated that "it is probably true to say that Hong Kong University is
potentially the largest single cultural contribution to
