Sir,

I have the honour to refer to your despatch No.425

of the 13th of June on the subject of the recommendations of

the Committee appointed by yourself to investigate and

report on the proper development of the University of Hong

Kong.

2. His Majesty's Government are fully aware of the

importance of the task which the University of Hong Kong

performs in catering for the needs of students from China

and thus serving in an important degree British relations

with that country, and the Committee's recommendations for

increasing the usefulness of the University in this respect

have accordingly aroused His Majesty's Government's keen

interest and sympathy. For my part. I appreciate the

importance of maintaining the original aims of the

University which are emphasized in the Committee's report,

and I would take this opportunity of placing on record my

firm belief that the institution can be developed to serve

the best interests of Sino-British relations in the future, k

and should receive all the support and assistance possible

in order to do so.

3. At the same time, His Majesty's Government realize

that the maintenance of the University's aim and its
