Re-establishment of Hong Kong

University.

9th of May in which you raised two

points of difficulty from the Treasury

point of view about the proposed. financial

assistance towards the re-establishment

of Hong Kong University.

To deal first with the political

aspect, you ask if we can throw any

light on whether or not it is H.M.G's

intention to endeavour to hold on to

Hong Kong for as long as possible, if

necessary resisting considerable pressure

from China. So far as we are concerned,

more case for the retrocession of Hong

Kong than there is for the surrender of

any other British Colony to which a have been laid by freige prowns.

on power has laid claims; and secondly,

we are aware of no proposal or intention to give up

that Hong Kong, should be given up A
