10,000 CHINESE MASS AT CONSULATE

WITHIN 24 hours of the anti-

British riots in Canton, 10,000 Chinese students massed, for three hours outside the British Consulate in Shanghai yesterday shouting anti-British and anti- American slogans, and singing patriotic songs.

Five hundred armed police sup- ported by armoured cars guarded the Consulate entrances.

The demonstrators were protest- ing against evictions by the British of Chinese from condemned huts in Kowloon, Crown territory opposite Hongkong-the issue which led to yesterday's violent outbreak.

The crowd dispersed after small deputation had been allowed to enter the Consulate grounds and hand a petition-believed to be an ultimatum-to the Consul-General.

Dash At Flag
