CANTON RIOTING TO BE INVESTIGATED

Chinese Government Action

An official of the Chinese Ministry of the Interior leaves Shanghai for Canton to-day to investigate Friday's anti- British riots in the South China Capital in which the British Consulate-General and business premises were burned down (reports Reuter from Shanghai).

The Chinese investigator, a police department supervisor, is to look into the circumstances of the rioting, the condition and safety of Britons, the extent of damage to British property, and the future protection of foreign nationals.

River traffic between Hong Kong and Canton has been virtually suspended, but a daily air service įs being flown.

In Hong Kong itself there was some agitation for a general strike yesterday, but it did not seem to be makingi much headway. The old walled city of Kowloon, where last week's eviction the Chinese 44

squatters" led to anti British riots and demonstrations in Shanghai, Hong Kong. and Nanking as well as Canton, yesterday became a sight seeing spot for thousands of Chinese.
